Background Ubiquitin regulatory X (UBX) domain-containing protein 1 (UBXN1) is a modular ubiquitin binding protein that consists of three domains: an N-terminal ubiquitin-associated (UBA) domain, a central coiled-coil domain, and a C-terminal UBX domain (1). UBXN1 has been shown to modulate the host innate immune response to viral infection. Indeed, research studies have demonstrated that UBXN1 retrains the type I interferon response induced by RNA viruses by binding to MAVS and compromising its oligomerization (2). UBXN1 has also been shown to negatively regulate NF-κB activation in response to proinflammatory cytokines, a finding which may have implications for antiviral signaling cascades (3). In addition to regulating antiviral signaling cascades, research has shown that UBXN1 participates in protein quality control by interacting with p97/VCP (4).
