Background NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I) is a large protein complex in the mitochondrial respiratory chain with multiple subunits. Complex I catalyzes the transfer of electrons from NADH to ubiquinone. NDUFB8 is one of the accessory subunits of mitochondrial complex I and is essential for its assembly (1). Studies show that nitration of NDUFB8 leads to necrosis mediated by RIP1 and RIP3 (2). In addition, variants cause deficiency of mitochondrial complex I in patients with Leigh-like encephalomyopathy (3).
