Background The vesicular GABA transporter (VGAT), also known as the vesicular inhibitory amino acid transporter (VIAAT), loads GABA and glycine from the neuronal cytoplasm into synaptic vesicles for vesicular storage and subsequent exocytosis of these inhibitory amino acids. VGAT is present in both GABAergic and glycinergic neurons, with its expression limited to the brain (1,2). It can also recognize β-alanine as a substrate (2). Recently, tau accumulation, as found in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, has been shown to selectively suppress the expression of the intracellular VGAT (3). At the same time, VGAT activation can help with anxiety exacerbated by AD pathology (4).
