Background Neuronatin (NNAT) is a cytoplasmic protein that may be important for brain development due to its high expression in early developing brain (1). Multiple neuronatin isoforms are generated by alternative splicing, including NNATα and NNATβ. Although neuronatin plays a role in establishing the central and peripheral nervous system in the final stages of embryogenesis, neuronatin expression is maintained in other tissues after development, including the hypothalamus, pancreatic β-cells, and adipocytes, suggesting additional neuronatin functions, particularly in metabolism (2,3). While neuronatin's cellular function remains incompletely understood, neuronatin is homologous to proteins, such as phospholamban and sarcolipin, that regulate sarcoplasmic and endoplasmic reticulum Ca ATPases (SERCA) pumps (3).
