Background Long-chain fatty acid transport protein 1 (FATP1), also known as solute carrier family 27 member 1 (SLC27A1), promotes the uptake of long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) by cells (1,2). FATP1/SLC27A1 is expressed in several insulin-sensitive tissues, such as adipose tissue and skeletal muscle. Studies on knockout mice show that FATP1/SLC27A1 is critical for insulin-induced LCFA uptake by adipocytes and skeletal muscle. In addition, FATP1/SLC27A1 is implicated in diet-induced obesity (2).
