Background DnaJ homolog subfamily C member 7 (DNAJC7) is part of a family of DNAJ proteins that act as molecular chaperones to regulate protein maintenance and quality control via its regulation of HSP70 chaperones (1). DNAJ proteins contain a J-domain, an approximately 70 amino acid region containing 4 alpha helices. The J-domain is critical for stimulation of ATP hydrolysis of HSP70 (2). There are some 50 DNAJ family members that are grouped into 1 of 3 classes based on domain structures. DNAJC7 is a Class III DNAJ protein (3). The human gene that encodes the protein, , is genetically linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a late-onset neurodegenerative disease characterized by degeneration of motor neurons (4,5).
