Background Glutathione S-transferase theta-1 (GSTT1) is a member of the GST superfamily. Studies on mouse tumor models show that Gstt1 is not essential for primary tumor growth but is critical for tumor dissemination and metastasis. Gstt1 binds to intracellular fibronectin and modifies it by glutathionylation, increasing fibronectin secretion and deposition into the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the metastatic microenvironment. In addition, GSTT1, along with GSTM1, protects renal tubular cells from nephrotoxicity and ferroptosis induced by the chemotherapeutic agent cisplatin (2).
