Background Monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzymes are riboflavin proteins enriched in the outer membrane of the mitochondria that function to catalyze the oxidative deamination of tyramine and monoamine neurotransmitters (1). Monoamine neurotransmitters include dopamine, phenethylamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine, and norepinephrine. Two MAO isozymes are encoded in the mammalian genome, including MAOA and MAOB. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain that plays a key role in memory, movement, motivation, and mood.
