Background Chitinase-like protein 3 (CHI3L3), also called Ym1, is a rodent specific chitinase-like protein (CLP) (1,7). Chitinases are a class of chitin-degrading enzymes produced in the host, which play a protective role in innate immunity against the chitin-containing pathogens, including parasites, fungi, and arthropods (1,2,7). In healthy tissues, Ym1 is expressed in the spleen, bone marrow, and lung (7). Ym1 expression can be induced by various inflammatory stimuli, such as allergic airway inflammation, parasitic infection, or autoimmune disease (7). Ym1 is primarily produced by alternatively activated (M2) macrophages and is often used as a marker for these cells (3-7).
