Background The Myc-associated zinc finger protein (MAZ) is a transcription factor (TF) with four annotated isoforms and is widely expressed in most human tissues. This protein was independently identified as a regulator of gene expression (1), activator of an insulin promoter (2), and modulator of serum amyloid A (3). Previous studies have shown that MAZ plays important roles in regulation of a wide variety of genes (4-6). Specifically, MAZ plays a dual role in regulating transcription initiation and termination processes. More recently, genome-wide screens have identified MAZ as a requirement for CTCF-mediated insulation (7).
