Background The embryonic lethal, abnormal vision, and -like (ELAVL) family of RNA-binding proteins has four members that undertake essential functions in brain development. ELAVL1 is ubiquitously expressed and predominantly involved in stabilizing mRNA targets. HuR/ELAVL1 is crucial for cellular processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation, and stress response (1). HuB/ELAVL2, HuC/ELAVL3, and HuD/ELAVL4 have historically been more specifically associated with neurodevelopment, with expression enriched in the central and peripheral nervous system, and are therefore referred to as neuronal ELAVLs (nELAVLs) (1). HuD/ELAVL4 is predominantly expressed in neurons and, at lower levels, in the pancreas and testis (2). It is associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus and various neurodegenerative diseases (3).
