It is implicated in the release process of a variety of hormones, most likely at a late stage of exocytosis through the production of lipids that are essential for the fusion process and seem to be also essential for fast neurotransmitter release. PLD1 is primarily localized in vesicular structures such as endosomes, lysosomes, and autophagosomes. PLD1 has four alternative splicing variants: PLD1a (124 kDa), PLD1b (119 kDa), PLD1c (69 kDa), PLD1d (112 kDa) (PMID: 18636075). It is best to use unboiled samples for detection, for membrane proteins are hydrophobic and tend to aggregate when boiled at high temperatures.
