HMGB3 is highly expressed in stem cells and cancer cells and is rarely transactivated in normal adult tissues, making it a promising therapeutic target. Overexpressed HMGB3 is closely related to tumor occurrence and reduced survival in cervical cancer, non-small-cell lung cancer, breast cancer, bladder cancer, hepatocellular carcnoma, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, and leukemia (PMID: 35332131).
