During ciliogenesis, CEP104 is translocated from the distal tip of the centriole to the elongated cilium tip. CEP104 is expressed in a variety of cell types, including tissues such as testis and kidney. Mutations in its gene are associated with the autosomal recessive disorder Joubert syndrome, which is characterized by distinctive mid-hindbrain and cerebellar malformations, actinic dyskinesia, irregular breathing, developmental delay, and ataxia.
