NeuroD2 is expressed in the postnatal cortex and mediate the activity-dependent refinement of thalamocortical axon terminals (PMID: 17453014). NeuroD2 is mainly involved in the development of the cerebellar and hippocampal granular neurons, neurons in the basolateral nucleus of amygdala and the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. Mutantions in NEUROD2 can cause neurodevelopmental disorders including intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorders (PMID: 34188164).
