Background Information
Vitamin D binding protein (DBP), also known as group-specific component (GC-globulin), is a glycosylated alpha-globulin produced primarily by the liver. It is a multifunctional, highly expressed, polymorphic serum protein. Its principal role is the transportation of the vitamin D metabolites throughout the vitamin D endocrine system. In addition, other functions have been reported for vitamin D binding protein, such as binding and sequestering globular actin and binding fatty acids to function in the immune system.
