Additional Information
CORTECS C18 Column, 90Å, 1.6 µm, 2.1 mm X 50 mm, 1/pk Since 1970, Waters has been offering a range of lab equipment based on solid-core particle technology, allowing chromatographers to increase efficiency in their work. Since then, the technology has improved greatly, culminating in the CORTECS family of columns. The CORTECS C18 Column offers the full range of benefits from solid-core particle technology, including higher efficiency when compared to similarly-sized fully porous particles and an increased sample throughput with comparable or better peak capacities. CORTECS C18 Columns use a traditional C18 bonded phase, offering the retention and stability that chromatographers expect from C18 ligands. These columns exhibit balanced retention of acids, bases, and neutrals at low- and mid-range pH, with superb resolution and retention for complex analyte mixtures. With the best peak shape, CORTECS C18 Columns offer increased sensitivity of basic analytes when using low ionic strength mobile phases such as formic acid. This general-purpose, high-efficiency column is sold individually with an inner diameter of 2.1 mm and a length of 50 mm. The spherical particles are 1.6 µm in size with a surface area of 100. Operating limits include a pH range of 2 to 8 pH, a temperature limit of 45 C, and a maximum pressure of 18,000 psi (1240 bar). For best results and an extended lifetime, the column can be used in conjunction with CORTECS C18 Pre-Column, 90Å, 1.6 µm, 2.1 mm X 5 mm, 1/pk . All CORTECS columns are manufactured in a cGMO, ISO 9001 certified plant using ultrapure reagents, and each batch of material is tested chromatographically to assure excellent, reproducible performance.

FAQ
Why Do Solid-Core Particles Offer Higher Efficiency? It was originally believed that this efficiency came from the shorter diffusion path in solid-core particles when compared with fully porous particles; however, this was shown to be a very small contributor. Instead, current research indicates that solid-core particles may improve performance by lowering each of the three terms of the van Deemter equation.
The A term is lowered because solid-core particles pack more uniformly; the B term is lowered due to the lower particle porosity reducing axial diffusion; the C term is lowered due to improved heat transfer, which diminishes radial temperature gradients.
