These behavior changes are most commonly noticed with polar compounds that are typically more retained. Using the Resolve C18 Column, basic compounds can be chromatographed using mobile-phase modifiers, like ion-pairing reagents which reduce excessive tailing. What Are Polar Compounds? Polar compounds are chemical compounds held together by polar covalent bonds. They can also be defined as a chemical species consisting of two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds which are polar in nature, due to the unequal sharing of electrons.

An example of a polar compound is water, scientifically known as H20. Because the covalent bonds between hydrogen and oxygen in the water molecule are polar in nature, it meets the criteria described above. While most applications benefit from end-capping, there are a number of reasons a scientist may prefer non-end-capped options like the Resolve C18 Column. Some legacy applications used non-end-capped materials and need to be reproduced in the same way. Other examples may include the separation of tartaric from quinic acid in fruit juice- few end-capped columns can separate to baseline isocratically, so a non-end-capped option is preferable.
